IN THE NEWS
Arizona has become the first state to enact a detransitioner bill of rights. The law requires insurance companies to cover medical expenses for people who were harmed by gender clinicians. The law just needs the signature of the Governor. This has revealed an interesting dichotomy. Here are two takes on this news.
In The latest GOP anti-trans strategy: Requiring ‘detransition’ services, the Arizona Mirror positions it this way: “Politicians have latched onto detransitioners to justify their calls to curtail gender-affirming care.”
On the other side, well that was tougher. The only press in AZ in favor of this law was an opinion piece (Good faith bill would outlaw discrimination in medical care and insurance coverage) in the Arizona Capital Times. Here, Greg Scott, Vice President of Policy at Center for Arizona Policy, writes: “the “Detransitioner Bill of Rights,” guarantees equality of care and coverage for overlooked, underserved people. The purpose of SB 1511 is not to pronounce judgment about the merits or the dangers of gender transition. And it doesn’t. Rather, it does what a law is supposed to do – solve a real problem affecting real people.”
For more on why offering health care to detransitioners “acts as a vehicle to strip rights away from trans people” (to quote one trans-activist) …. crickets. That means “nothing” to our non-American readers.
