This excellent essay describes the experience for so many of us. I have tried "The Talk" so many times with people I consider to be reasonable. It's almost a litmus test. I had one friend respond, yes, I see your point on the harms of gender ideology but you agree trans women are women, right? I've had other friends nod and agree with me - maybe just to shut me up. I don't know what people really believe on this issue anymore. It's too fraught for them to be honest. I know one friend who believed me and recommended her book group read Irreversible Damage and they pilloried her for it.
Our neighbors used to be our best friends, but now we no longer speak. They affirmed and supported (even financially) our daughter's transition. We do not affirm her delusions, although we work very hard to maintain our relationship with her.
