A large part of the problem is the support that medical and psychological professions have given to this BS movement. With all the science the US medical profession has given to the world, why are we lagging the European countries in putting a stop to this travesty.

because our medical system works on a capitalistic and entrepreneurial profit model. We do not have nationalized medicine in which the single-payer, the state, has incentives to control costs and to end treatments that are not proven effective.
In the United States, the Democratic Party is fully on board and despite the evidence will not walk it back. Walking it back would mean admitting a mistake and in the current political situation here, nobody will ever admit a mistake.
It's now an article of partisan faith. (Yes there are Republicans who support it but it's not the same fanatical level)
