Sexual orientation as expressed by the AYA prior to transgender-identification is listed separately for natal females and for natal males (Table 2). Overall, 41% of the AYAs expressed a non-heterosexual sexual orientation prior to disclosing a transgender-identification.
It is important to note that none of the AYAs described in this study would have met diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria in childhood (Table 3). I always appreciate when we just say the words, like Lupron for instance. It’s not a “puberty blocker” or a “pause to think.” It’s a powerful medication called Lupron, used for serious medical conditions such as cancer and endometriosis. I took it as part of the IVF protocol and it’s awful. Awful. Precocious puberty is a medical problem, and may require such a drug after careful evaluation of the physical issues. A kid liking stereotypically girl/boy things is not a medical problem. Talk about discriminating against your kid. You like unicorns? Damn son you must actually be a girl! To the cancer meds! 😡
