Nitpick: I think Ibram X. Kendi is obnoxious and spreads racial division, but putting the guy’s legal name in scare quotes seems kind of rude. His birth name is Ibram Henry Rogers, and he changed his middle and last names when he got married. Are you going to put other people’s names in scare quotes too, if they changed them when they go…

Regardless of the reason why someone changed their name, I think acting like someone’s legal name is somehow illegitimate is needlessly impolite. If I say, “Ellen Page was nominated for Best Actress,” that’s a true statement. If I say, “She has now declared a trans identity,” that’s a true statement, because she’s always going to be female. If I say, “Elliot Page wrote a memoir”? As much as we may dislike the reason behind her name change, that’s equally as true as the other statements.
Anyway. I would be hugely unsurprised if testosterone has a lot to do with violence from FtM people.
Kendi is a grifter and he should be exposed for all of his nonsense....including name change. BU is paying dearly for their "faith" in this individual and his racist, anti-racist agenda.
Eh, some of our favorite activists get paid a salary by a university, publish books and do paid speaking gigs too. It's not a problem in itself, but it does tend to change the way they approach their activism.
Exposed for his name change? It’s not like it’s secret information. He’s a legally competent American adult, and as such, he’s entitled to legally change his name.
Henry Rogers sounds....just so generic. Ibram X. Kendi sounds like it would sell a lot more books related to his activism. Sorry, but the man is a grifter and stirs up a whole lot of trouble with his profiteering disguised as activism.
As long said originally, I’m not a fan of the guy. I just think it’s needlessly petty to act like someone’s legal name isn’t their “real” name, just because you don’t like that they changed it. If my friend Anne Smith changes her name when she marries Jack Jones, and I hate this because I think Jack is a complete asshole, I’m still not going to refer to Anne as “Anne Jones” (Anne Smith), like her name is fake and needs scare quotes. It’s her legitimate name whether I like it or not.
Kendi’s birth name *isn’t* Henry Rogers, either. His first name has always been Ibram and his birth name is Ibram Henry Rogers. I don’t see the point in not treating him like *every other person* who legally changed their name and acknowledging that it’s his current legal name.
