I completely agree. There are some troubled /self harming yet sometimes highly articulate and otherwise functional adult people who wish to "live as another sex". Fine. Let's be kind. It doesn't follow that being "really trans" has any meaning and we ought to stop pretending that it does. My best understanding is that with the men the psychological problem divides into straight (autogynephilia) and gay (androphilic) subcategories. As for Page - she is indeed profoundly ill whatever the reasons and ought not to be celebrated for it as it is so bad for the young. Also, she can't act :)
We should not accept the misuse of language, indulge an ideology, upend society, and turn a blind eye to reality.
I think there's no point in trying to define the "reason" someone wants to live as another sex. The examples you cite are theories; they may be good ones but they remain conjecture.
I very well understand the hunger to escape one's real self by name change, religion change, etc. It takes a very long time and lots of life experience to recognize that "wherever you go, there you are." Self-loathing is a bad disease.
