I would point out that, if Sawyer wanted to change to opposite gender clothing at school, the schools would provide a place to change, and all the clothing. They would also keep it a secret from his mother. And, if he wanted to transition, they would provide transportation and support to do that without her permission or knowledge. They should be equally willing to help him live a normal life against her will, and counseling to help him learn to deal with her mental health issues, since they are all about affirming the child.
Seems like you could teach him to ask for that support. And you could legally request that his wishes be honored.
Sawyer knows full well he’s a boy, wants to be a boy, loves being a boy. She is actually the one not affirming his gender technically. He will be protected no matter what!
Amy, this is brilliant. Use the wacky system to fight the wackier mother. Harrison, could he keep a change of clothes in a school locker or the school counselor's office? They have a legal obligation to support him in his gender identity which is a BOY, not nonbinary. Good luck to both of you!
Schools are a wild card though. It’s hard to be sure what they will do. The best strategy is to immobilize them with a letter from a psychologist saying the child is receiving treatment and not to get involved without consulting the psych first. If they interfere after that then they are practicing medicine without a license.
My sympathies dad.

He’s loves being a little boy and knows he is one! No school yet! Too young
Maybe you'll have full custody by then.
